Coraline (/ ˈkɒrəlaɪn /) is a dark fantasy children's novella by British author Neil Gaiman, published in by Bloomsbury and Harper Collins. It was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novella, the Nebula Award for Best Novella, and the Bram Stoker Award for Best Work for Young Readers. Storyline When Coraline moves to an old house, she feels bored and neglected by her parents. She finds a hidden door with a bricked up passage. During the night, she crosses the passage and finds a parallel world where everybody has buttons instead of eyes, with caring parents and all her dreams coming true. Coraline is a blend of fairy tale, Twilight Zone weirdness and David Cronenburg style horror. It is a well crafted, psychological tale pieced together from Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and The Naked Lunch. Technically, it is marvelous. The stop motion animation and models are nothing short of astounding. Artikel verbessern Neuen Artikel anlegen Autorenportal Hilfe Letzte Änderungen Kontakt Spenden. She is shown to wear a yellow raincoat paired with yellow shin-high rain boots and loose denim jeans. This outfit is usually worn when she is outside exploring the garden.

When Coraline is inside her house while counting the windows and doors, she is clad in a full-sleeved striped red shirt with the same blue jeans, and orange socks.

There are also matching pants. It starts with Coraline Exploring outside of her home gripping a poison oak branch along the way.

She then heads down the trail to the orchard to find the well using her magic dowser rod. While doing she meets Wybie who greatly annoys her as well as his cat.

She then goes home and despite her wanting to do things like garden she cannot. This makes her go to her dad.

He tells her to explore the house. While exploring, Coraline finds a small door sealed off by a brick wall.

That night, Coraline is awakened by a mouse and follows it to the small door where she discovers a long, dark corridor in the brick wall's place.

These beings prove to be warmer and more attentive than Coraline's real parents, particularly the other mother, who does everything she can to impress Coraline.

Coraline decides to stay the night at the other world, but when she wakes the next morning, she finds herself in her old world.

Despite warnings of danger from her neighbors, Coraline continues to go to the other world at night to escape from the doldrums of her real life and is entertained by button-eyed "other" versions of her neighbors, including a mute other Wybie, who guides her through the other world.

During her third visit, Coraline encounters a black cat from her own world that has the ability to talk in the other world, and also warns Coraline of danger.

She disregards the warnings until the other mother invites her to live in the other world forever if she sews buttons over her eyes.

The Black Cat walks behind the Pink Palace signpost and disappears before the screen fades to black. Director Henry Selick met author Neil Gaiman just as Gaiman was finishing the novel Coraline , and given that Gaiman was a fan of Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas , he invited him to make a possible film adaptation.

As Selick thought a direct adaptation would lead to "maybe a minute movie", his screenplay had some expansions, such as the creation of Wybie. When looking for a design away from that of most animation, Selick discovered the work of Japanese illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi and invited him to become the concept artist.

One of Uesugi's biggest influences was on the color palette, which was muted in reality and more colorful in the Other World, similar to the film The Wizard of Oz.

Coraline was staged in a ,square-foot 13, m 2 warehouse in Hillsboro, Oregon. Every object on screen was made for the film.

Thousands of high-quality 3D models , ranging from facial expressions to doorknobs, were printed in 3D using the Polyjet matrix systems, which enable the fast transformation of CAD computer-aided design drawings into high-quality 3D models.

At its peak, the film involved the efforts of people, [10] including from 30 [12] to 35 [10] animators and digital designers in the Digital Design Group DDG , directed by Dan Casey, and more than technicians and designers.

The soundtrack for Coraline features songs in French composer Bruno Coulais , with one, "Other Father Song", by They Might Be Giants.

The Other Father's singing voice is provided by John Linnell , one of the singers from the band.

They had initially written 10 songs for the film; when a melancholy tone was decided, all but one were cut. Coulais' score was performed by the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra and features choral pieces sung by the Children's Choir of Nice in a nonsense language.

The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States on July 21, , by Universal Studios Home Entertainment. A 3-D version comes with four sets of 3-D glasses—specifically the green-magenta anaglyph image.

Coraline was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the United Kingdom on October 12, A 3-D version of the film was also released on a 2-Disc Collector's Edition.

Total sales stand at over 2. The website for Coraline involves an interactive exploration game where the player can scroll through Coraline's world.

It won the Webby Award for "Best Use of Animation or Motion Graphics", both by the people and the Webby organization. It was also nominated for the Webby "Movie and Film" category.

It was developed by Papaya Studio for the Wii and PlayStation 2 and by Art Co. It was released on January 27, , close to the film's theatrical release.

The website's critical consensus reads, "With its vivid stop-motion animation combined with Neil Gaiman's imaginative story, Coraline is a film that's both visually stunning and wondrously entertaining.

David Edelstein said the film is "a bona fide fairy tale " that needed a "touch less entrancement and a touch more Scott of The New York Times called the film "exquisitely realized," with a "slower pace and a more contemplative tone than the novel.

It is certainly exciting, but rather than race through ever noisier set pieces toward a hectic climax in the manner of so much animation aimed at kids, Coraline lingers in an atmosphere that is creepy, wonderfully strange and full of feeling.

I call it "delightfully scary" because while it grips the reader's attention with creepy happenings that may cause a case of the shivers, it is not the kind of scary book that leads to nightmares of the "it could happen to me" kind. 3/18/ · Coraline was released in While the budget was merely $60 million, the box office recorded $ million success. Surely it was a big success leaving fans in a frenzied hurry to wonder if or will there be a sequel to the movie, Coraline 2. While many might assume it’s a children’s movie considering the main [ ].
